Wyoming Award

United Rehabilitation Services, Inc. (URS) presented Trehab with their Wyoming County Employer of the Year Award.  Trehab’s Workforce Development Organization represented by Tammi Mowry, Workforce Director and Phil Smiley Tunkhannock Site Supervisor accepted the award presented by Molly Hinkin URS Board President on October 19, 2012, at the Annual Meeting and Awards Dinner held at the Wilkes-Barre East Mountain Inn.

URS Inc., is a community rehabilitation program which develops a comprehensive plan of rehabilitation and a wide variety of vocational services, for adults and students with disabilities, who live in Northeastern Pennsylvania.  URS sites are located in Wilkes-Barre, Hazelton, and Tunkhannock.  The main focus of URS is meaningful employment, while assisting individuals with disabilities in the achievement of vocational goals and objectives.  The agency has been a leader in the development and implementation of many creative vocational strategies that result in positive employment outcomes for people with significant disabilities.  The variety of URS employer provided services range from, food and sanitation, to grounds maintenance and on-site paper shredding services.

Collaboration between Trehab and URS, Inc. resulted in highly successful linkage of Trehab customers and URS clients, with Project Linus.  This multi-faceted programming offered Trehab customers an opportunity to interact and learn about individuals with disabilities, while giving URS clients the chance to learn a new skill, which was the assembling of handmade, Project Linus blankets.  Completed blankets were then donated to Project Linus to comfort children who are seriously ill, traumatized, or otherwise in need, through the gifts of new, handmade blankets, lovingly created by blanketeers.  As a result of cooperative programming, several Trehab customers who were already imparted with patience, compassion, and positive attitudes, were able to develop additional skills required for employment in the social services.  Cooperation among Trehab, URS Inc,. and Project Linus, was mutually successful, not only in terms of good will, but also, in regard to career decisions that resulted in meaningful employment.

More recently, Trehab contracted with URS to hire participants to handle lawn and landscaping duties at the Trehab Laceyville, PA housing unit.
